Nappy Changing Policy

It is the policy of Cuan Bhríde Childcare Centre and in the interest of the children's health and safety, that staff follow the nappy changing procedures correctly and that a high standard of hygiene is evident at all times.

  1. To ensure that nappy changing time is a pleasant experience for the child, staff members use this opportunity to interact with the child and provide one to one attention.

  2. Children's nappies and other items are stored in individual compartments and labelled accordingly.

  3. Disposable paper towels are used for hand-drying purposes.

  4. Disposable gloves are provided and worn during nappy changing.

  5. Staff will ensure that all creams and lotions are not shared between children. Creams and lotions for each child will be individually labelled.

  6. Staff must always wash their hands after every nappy change using warm water and liquid soap.

  7. Parents should notify staff when a child has an injection. Dirty nappies are to be double bagged for 48 hours when injections are given.

  8. Soiled nappies are bagged and disposed of hygienically in a leak proof, cleanable and sealable/airtight container.

  9. The nappy changing mat is disinfected after every individual child’s use.

  10. Children are never left unattended when having their nappy changed.

  11. If required, another staff member is available to provide assistance.

  12. A cleaning schedule is in place to ensure that the nappy changing area is clean and hygienic at all times. All surfaces are to be cleaned and disinfected daily.

  13. If changing mat cover is cracked or torn, it must be discarded and replaced.
