TV Policy

Policy

Cuan Bhríde Childcare Centre supports the philosophy that children learn best through active interaction and involvement with their environment. This knowledge, coupled with the understanding that television, as   a rule, is not an interactive medium, is the foundation for the policy that the Centre does not provide open television viewing for your child. A wide variety of other opportunities and activities are available for your child when s/he needs quiet or restful time.

Using TV effectively in child care relies on the quality of the programs that are chosen for viewing and on the efficiency of the procedures implemented to ensure TV is used in ways that support children’s overall health, development and well-being.

Procedure

  1. DVD’s, internet clips and other media materials should be watched in advance by a Senior Early Years Teacher to ensure they are suitable for viewing and are age appropriate to the group.

  2. There should be appropriate alternative activities available to children if they do not wish to watch the television.

  3. Staff should sit with children during this time and discuss comments/observations made by children during the watching of the video.  This will enhance the learning that has taken place and help children to rationalise what they have watched.

  4. Television will be watched very occasionally. In most cases, children will have no access to television.
